The history of Sanskrit dictionary is, perhaps, older than that of the Sanskrit Grammar. It got started with Vedic Concordance named ‘Nighantu’. In reality, instead of being a dictionary, Nighantu is more or less a word. During later period, various dictionaries were compiled but, unfortunately, we have lost their original scripts.
Amara Simha’s ‘Amarakosa’ has been considered to be the oldest and most popular compilation. It is also known as Namalinganusasana. in later period, Halayudha-kosa, Vaijayanti-kosa, Mankha-kosa, Nama-mala and Anekartha-samgraha etc. names are worth mentioning.

నోములు వ్రతాలు అనగానే స్త్రీలు చేసేవి అనే అభిప్రాయం కలుగుతుంది ఎవరికైనా. ఈ మాట కొంత వరకు నిజం. ఎక్కువగా వ్రతాలు చేసేది మహిళలే. వారికి ప్రతి అవసరానికి ఒక వ్రతమో, నోమో సిద్ధంగా ఉంటుంది. కొద్ది కాలం క్రితం వరకు కొన్ని శతాబ్దాలుగా స్త్రీలు విద్యా విత్తాలకు దూరమయ్యారు. మగ పిల్లలు గురుకులాల్లోనో, వీధి బడుల్లోనో చదువుకునే వారు. బాల్య వివాహాలు జరిగేవి. ఆడ పిల్లలకి సత్ప్రవర్తన నేర్పటానికి వారి చేత నోములు, వ్రతాలు చేయించే వారు. పెళ్ళయిన వెంటనే చిన్నతనంలో చిట్టిబొట్టు( తిలక ధారణం యొక్క ప్రాశస్త్యాన్నితెలిపి, బొట్టు పెట్టుకోటం, పెట్టటం నేర్పటానికి), నిత్య శృంగారం (అలంకరించుకోటం, అలంకరించటాల్లో శిక్షణ) మొదలైన వ్రతాలతో ప్రారంభించి, పువ్వు తాంబూలం, పండు తాంబూలం అనే నోముతో సాటి వారికి భక్తి భావంతో ఇవ్వటం అనేది అలవాటు చేయటం జరిగేది. ఎక్కువ వ్రతాల ప్రయోజనం ఇదే.
