Brass diyas (oil lamps) can be used in daily pooja and on special occasions like Diwali, Navarathri, Dussera, etc. It is a very good choice for return gifts during ceremonies like marriages, home warmings, upanayanams, temple festivals, etc. In almost all the Indian houses, lighting a lamp at both daybreak and dusk is customary. Today the diyas are usually lit in the pooja (prayer) room, while in olden days they used to light-up the whole house. Daily worship or pooja starts with lighting a lamp. Even before commencing homam/aavahanam, lighting a standing lamp (kuthuvilakku) is an integral part of the tradition.
